Drywall sheet calculator — area to sheets to buy
Enter wall or ceiling area, a waste percent for cuts, and sheet coverage (for example 32 sq ft for a 4×8 panel). Round up to whole sheets for a shopping list in imperial or metric.
Results
With waste: 352 sq ft
Sheets to buy: 11
Formula
withWaste=area×(1+waste); sheets=ceil(withWaste÷sheet)
How the numbers are calculated
- With waste = 320 × (1+0.1) = 352
- Sheets to buy = ceil(352 ÷ 32) = 11
Guessing sheet counts leaves either awkward gaps mid-wall or a car full of leftover boards that collect dust. Area times a modest waste percent, divided by real sheet coverage, rounds to a buy list you can load once.
Enter the coverage of the board size you will actually hang — a 4×8 at 32 sq ft is common in North America, but metric panels and specialty lengths differ. Waste covers cutoffs at doors, windows, and odd corners; bump it for diagonals or heavy patterning around fixtures.
This page does not choose thickness, moisture resistance, or screw schedules. Use the sheet count for supplier quotes, then follow the manufacturer and local practice on the wall. When the surface is ready for color, switch to paint or wallpaper.

Drywall FAQ
- What coverage is a 4×8 sheet?
- Usually 32 sq ft. Metric boards differ; type the coverage printed on the stack you will buy.
- Walls and ceiling together?
- Add the areas first, or run the calculator twice and sum the sheet counts if waste habits differ.
- Need paint after hanging?
- Open Paint calculator once joints are finished.
- Is this structural advice?
- No — sheet count only. Fire rating, thickness, and fastening schedules stay with local code and the product label.
