Estimate roofing squares and shingle bundles
Enter each roof section’s footprint area and rise per 12 of run. The tool applies the pitch multiplier, adds waste, converts to squares, and rounds up bundles for shopping estimates. Roof work is dangerous — hire a licensed roofer for real measurements and install.

Results
Roof area: 1118.03 sq ft
With waste: 1229.83 sq ft
Squares: 12.298
Bundles to buy: 37
Formula
Pitch factor M = √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12; Roof area = Σ(footprint × M); With waste = roof area × (1 + waste); Squares = area ÷ 100; Bundles = ceil(squares × bundles per square)
Worked steps (check these)
- #1: M = √(6²+12²)/12 = 1.118; Roof area = 1000 × 1.118 = 1118.03 sq ft
- Roof area Σ = 1118.03 sq ft
- With waste = 1118.03 × (1+0.1) = 1229.83 sq ft
- Squares = 1229.83 ÷ 100 = 12.298
- Bundles to buy = ceil(12.298 × 3) = 37

Homeowners usually know the house footprint better than the sloped roof area. Pitch stretches that footprint: a steeper roof needs more shingles than a low-slope lid over the same walls. This calculator applies that stretch with a standard rise-over-run multiplier.
Squares (100 sq ft each in US practice) are how roofing is quoted. Bundles convert squares into what you can load in a truck. Because ridges, valleys, starter strips, and hips eat extra pieces, waste percents on roofs run higher than on a simple bedroom floor.
Never treat a web estimate as permission to walk a steep roof. Soft spots, rotten decking, and fall hazards do not show up in footprint math. Use the bundle count to compare supplier quotes, then let a licensed roofer verify pitch and structure on site.
How to estimate roofing materials
- Choose units and enter footprint area for each roof section
- Enter rise per 12 of run for that section
- Add more sections if needed; set waste % and bundles per square
- Read roof area, squares, and bundles to buy — then confirm with a pro
Why use this roof calculator
- Converts footprint + pitch into sloped area.
- Supports multiple roof sections for wings and add-ons.
- Shows squares and bundles with editable bundles-per-square.
- Puts a clear safety warning next to shopping numbers.
- Lets you raise waste for hips, valleys, and starter courses.
Good for
- Rough asphalt shingle shopping lists
- Comparing 4/12 vs 6/12 material impact on the same footprint
- Garage + house sections with different pitches
- Homeowner prep before meeting a roofing contractor
- Insurance or budget worksheets that need a square count
Common roofing estimate mistakes to avoid
- Using floor area inside the house instead of roof footprint including overhangs.
- Leaving waste at 0% on a cut-up roof with valleys.
- Assuming every shingle brand is exactly three bundles per square.
- Ignoring that steep pitches change labor and safety more than the multiplier alone suggests.
- Buying materials from an online estimate without a site measure for decking repairs.
Worked roof examples
| Input | Output | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Footprint 1000 sq ft, rise 6 (6/12 pitch), 10% waste, 3 bundles/square | M≈1.118; roof≈1118 sq ft; with waste≈1230; ≈12.3 squares → 37 bundles | M=√(rise²+12²)/12; area=footprint×M×(1+waste); bundles=ceil(squares×3) |
| Footprint 1000 sq ft, rise 4 (4/12), 10% waste, 3 bundles/square | M≈1.054; roof≈1054; with waste≈1159; ≈11.6 squares → 35 bundles | Lower pitch needs slightly less material than a 6/12 on the same footprint |
| Two sections: 800 sq ft @ rise 6 + 200 sq ft @ rise 8, 15% waste | Sum each footprint×M, then apply waste and bundle rounding | Use Add roof section for wings, dormers, or detached garage caps |
Roof pitch calculator FAQ
- What does rise per 12 mean?
- Pitch is often written as rise/12 — inches of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run. A 6/12 roof rises 6 inches per foot of run.
- What is the pitch multiplier?
- M = √(rise² + 12²) / 12. Multiply the flat footprint by M to approximate the sloped surface area for a simple plane.
- How many bundles per square?
- Many asphalt shingle lines use about three bundles per square (100 sq ft), but architectural and specialty products differ. Enter the number from the wrapper.
- Is this safe to install from?
- No. Treat results as shopping estimates. Climbing roofs is hazardous; structure, underlayment, ice barriers, and fastening need a licensed pro.
- What about hips, valleys, and ridges?
- Simple footprint × pitch under-counts cut waste on complex roofs. Raise waste % or add sections, and still verify with a roofer’s measure.
- Metal or tile roofs?
- Squares still describe area, but panel or tile coverage per bundle/pallet differs. Adjust bundles-per-square or convert area to the product’s coverage chart.
- Planning a porch roof over a new deck?
- Estimate coverings here, then boards with Deck material calculator. Ground pads use Concrete calculator.
