Knitting gauge calculator — swatch to cast-on and rows

Enter stitches and rows in your blocked swatch, the swatch size, and the target width and length. Get cast-on stitches and total rows for knitting or crochet panels — ease is yours to add.

Units

Use the same unit for swatch size and garment targets — switch above to convert everything together.

Results

Cast on: 88

Total rows: 150

Formula

castOn=ceil(width×stitches÷swatch); rows=ceil(length×rows÷swatch)

How the numbers are calculated

  1. Cast on = ceil(16 × 22 ÷ 4) = 88
  2. Total rows = ceil(20 × 30 ÷ 4) = 150

Measure swatch and garment in the same unit. Ease and borders are not added automatically.

Gauge mismatches stretch or shrink finished pieces in ways no pattern photo warns you about. Scaling a real swatch before you cast on a sweater saves frogging a body panel two evenings later.

The math is proportional: target width × stitches in swatch ÷ swatch width, rounded up to a whole stitch count; the same idea for rows and length. Keep swatch and garment in one unit — mixing centimeters and inches silently ruins the cast-on.

Borders, button bands, and ease are intentional design choices, so they stay outside the calculator. Add them to the target sizes, then buy yarn with yarn yardage once the stitch counts feel right.

How to use

  1. Measure stitches and rows in the blocked swatch
  2. Enter swatch size and target width/length in the same unit
  3. Read cast-on and total rows

Why this calculator

  • Scales with one consistent unit from swatch to garment
  • Rounds up to whole stitches and rows you can actually work
  • Pairs cleanly with yarn yardage planning

Good for

  • Hats and beanies
  • Scarves and wraps
  • Simple sweater panels

Tips

  • Block the swatch the same way you will block the garment.
  • Recheck gauge after you change needle or hook size.
  • Write the cast-on on the pattern so future-you does not re-swatch blindly.

Examples

Input Output Note
22 sts / 30 rows in 10 cm, target 40×50 cm Cast on 88, rows 150 Same unit on swatch and garment — here both cm
18 sts / 24 rows in 4 in, target 20 in wide Cast on 90 Imperial works the same; do not mix inches and cm

Gauge FAQ

Is this the same as yarn yardage?
No. Yardage is Yarn calculator. This page only scales stitches and rows from gauge to size.
What about ease?
Add ease to the target width yourself. The tool does not assume positive or negative ease.
Crochet too?
Yes — count stitches and rows in the swatch the same way, then scale to the panel you want.
Why block the swatch?
Unblocked fabric lies about finished size. Treat the swatch the way you will treat the garment.
